My quest for the best online Dictionary

leggybook

I tend to browse a lot.  Mostly I browse in English speaking web sites.   Therefore I use dictionaries every now and then.  I was really surprised to find that there are a lot of English online dictionaries that have different qualities.  So I made a list.  This is of couse the best online list of English dictionaries there is…

Top 10 Dictionary sites I found are:

  1. http://onelook.com
This site points to other sites and what they have to say about it.   So its really a dictionary lookup tool that uses other online sites.  Got reverse dictionary that can come in handy if a word is missing from your otherwise functioning brain.  Lacking thesaurus but points to other dictionaries that do have it.  This one never came up empty when I looked for modern words.
  2. http://oxforddictionaries.com
This site has very nice description of words and their meaning.  The only thing lacking is the pronunciations of the word in audio.
  3. http://dictionary.com
Obviously the best domain name out there. They have a quotes option that is nice to have.
  4. http://www.merriam-webster.com
This is a nice one. I like the look and feel.  It’s got thesaurus and encyclopedia tab in the interface as well.  Very nice.
  5. http://www.collinsdictionary.com
This one is simple and easy to use. They have thesaurus and a translator to multiple languages.  Does not have the usually crowed look of so many of the other sites.  This might just be my favorite dictionary.
  6. http://www.thefreedictionary.com
The free dictionary is probably the most versatile dictionary.  There are a medical, legal, financial, acronyms, idioms, encyclopedia and Wikipedia encyclopedia.  Impressive options there indeed.
  7. http://www.wordnik.com/
Simple and likable.  Simple word search looks to be move updated than many of the others.
  8. http://www.vocabulary.com
If you want a simple word lookup then this site is nice.  Well designed and simple, a no nonsense web interface.  Also a nice domain name.  No ads which is a plus.
  9. http://www.macmillandictionary.com
    Nice dictionary and thesaurus combo.
  10. http://www.webopedia.com
Computer dictionary.  No list would be complete without it.

It’s really interesting to see the difference in responses of the dictionaries.   If you test the dictionaries with modern technology words to see how fast they keep up you get interesting results.  The best site obviously to test is http://onelook.com since it looks up in all the other sites as well.  I urge you to test them all and see for yourself and find your own favorite dictionary. I hope you have the same fun I did when looking for the greatest online dictionary.
